Before Writing: To complete this assignment, it will be necessary to have read and studied chapters 11 and 12 in Writing about Cool. Pay special attention to the exercises Rice provides throughout chapter 11 as well as the relationships between literacy and technology in chapter 12.

Writing:

• First, provide a thorough overview of chapter 11. Make sure to be attuned to the nuances in the chapter by providing a close reading. At minimum, your description should thoroughly attend to the following concepts:spontaneous writing, Kerouac’s rhetoric of race, nostalgia, the cut-up, juxtaposition, and tape recording experiments.
• Next, discuss how “skratching” shapes its own literate practice. To answer this question, you should pay special attention to the relationship between literacy and technology.
• Paragraph this reading response the way it works best for your writing. Make sure to provide smooth transitions between all sections.
