- Before Writing: To complete this assignment, it will be necessary to have read and studied chapters six and seven of Writing about Cool.
- Writing:
- We will begin from the assumption that in chapter six Rice is making an argument about cool in relation to appropriation. Identify what you believe this argument to be and how Rice arrives at it. Begin your paragraph with the concluding points Rice wants you to accept and then explain the steps he went through to arrive at these points. In addition, hyperlink two words: One that links to an issue of African or African-American culture described in the chapter and one the that links to another issue of your choosing.
- After having identified what you believe to be the argument in chapter six, respond to it by considering the questions of oppression/empowerment and participation Rice wants us to consider. Include two links in this paragraph as well, but stay away from commercial websites.
- For the next paragraph, explain how the discussion of appropriation changes in the seventh chapter compared to sixth. Be as thorough as possible. In this paragraph you should mention at least two musicians Rice alludes to and make one hyperlink to song lyrics and one hyperlink to an album cover you have found on the web that are relevant to the discussion.
- For the last paragraph, either write out a definition of what you believe plagiarism to be or a definition of what you believe sampling to be.
- Make sure to edit your work carefully (and to get your links correct.) When you’re ready, post your entry. Remember to deselect the “Don’t Give Me Credit” Category and to select your name as the category.
