That Side of Me

The Poem, “That Side of Me” by Alisa Waldron, got my attention due to it’s introspective subject matter. The site as a whole, was very simple, but not in a negative way. It appeared very professional and used it’s images intentionally. They were placed periodically throughout the site to help make a connection to how the writer was feeling in the text nearby. The text was the dominant feature on the site and signified that it was the most important part.

“That Side of Me” was appealing because of its subject of wondering. Its make-up of inner thoughts was something I could identify with. Her mind streaming from one place to another, skipping from one concern to the next and rambling in between. The girl in Alisa’s poem is a young uni-girl backpacking on the holidays, but really she is trying to escape life and the people who know her. She shares her inner-most thoughts with her sort of “diary” but, in the end turns to speak to the reader whom she calls “you”. This “you” of course, turns out to be her love who has past away.

Although I could not identify with her experience of losing her love, I could identitfy with her genuine dislike for other’s false attitudes and kindness. Towards the end of her poem, she calls her holidays “a break from being fake, from being someone that she’s not”, which is an idea that sounded surprisingly refreshing.

As a whole, I appreciated the honesty of Alisa’s poem, the boldnesss of the subject matter and the images that helped it along the site. I would recommend it to anyone who wantes to identitfy with someone who is being honest about life and themselves.
